Swing

This week’s swing is by Victoria.  Victoria has been in the studio doing work experience over the last month. The swing is inspired by our wave graphic in the window and is her representation of Jonah and the whale or at least what was left of Jonah after he met the whale.  She made the whale in a children’s craft workshop at an Art gallery in Liverpool and Jonah was a keepsake stolen from her art foundation course.  She claims it was a victimless crime.  Good luck goes to Victoria for her 4th year at GSA (and possibly in the small claims court after this post)

Edinburgh Uni ‘In-between’ spaces

We met with University of Edinburgh to discuss our work recently  during which they told us about a  project they were working on with their students and we thought it was such a great idea that we just had to blog about it.  The project involved a campus wide competition which asked student to generate spatial ideas for the in-between spaces on campus.  They received a huge variety of entries (see example above)  and are currently in the process of building the winner of the competition.  Should be interesting to see the final result.

BDP Placebook – Saltire Centre

The Saltire Centre reached no 1 of BDP’s Placebook yesterday.  The Placebook has been set up to celebrate BDP’s  50th anniversary year and showcases their favorite buildings while asking visitors to vote on theirs.  The Saltire Centre is currently in the lead with 388 votes.  As friends, colleagues and client’s will know Val and Scott designed the innovative interior of the Saltire before leaving Curious Oranj and it was the approach and philosophy they employed within this project which inspired them to set up Nomad in the first place.  Please visit the blog and vote for the project here http://placebook.bdp.com/2000s/saltire-centre  (above the umbrellas and an original floor plan showing the interior drawn by the guys here)

Swing

This weeks swing is courtesy of Antonio or rather his girlfriend Louise.  Louise studied Visual Communication at GSA and has collected these old sign letters on her travels around the world. We think they are really beautiful.  Sadly she does not have a N.O.M.A and D so we still have no sign outside the studio although excitingly there are now plans for one as we have decided it is time to stop confusing taxi drivers and postmen – more on this soon.

Fence Art

We have been working with the patients and doctors of Rutland Medical Practice for nearly a year now and things are really begining to come together on site.  In addition to the interior we were also commissioned to design a fence which would incorporate art in some way.  The fence is a palisade fence with a paint finish.  The Y shaped ‘Branches’  are galvanised to memorialise the industrial past of the site which used to house a galvanizing plant which was part of the ship building industry.   The shape of the branches is derived from the trees felled to make way for the centre and they are intended to symbolize the growth and strength of the community who have used the centre since the 1940’s.  In addition to the fence a number of pieces have been produced by a local artist from the wood retrieved from the felled trees.  We were sent pictures by the Blacksmith last week and it is begining to look very exciting.  Can’t wait to see the final install which should be in place for September this year.
